UrbEd Inc. is facilitating an iTAG on building an understanding of underprivileged students’ rights and needs in schools. Specifically, we want to focus on the school to prison pipeline and teacher diversity because these are extremely significant factors in how unhealthy classroom environments are created. Zero tolerance policies have plagued Philadelphia classrooms for decades and have an especially negative effect on low-income minority students.
To work towards ending these issues we must change the environments and cultures of these schools. In this iTAG we will look at how the school to prison pipeline has been addressed in other environment and how it can be practically addressed in our schools and our communities. We will focus on restorative justice, student-driven solutions, and classroom solution. We must also address the lack of diversity in faculty. Encouraging more people of color, particularly Black males to teach in schools.
As students, we have a unique perspective on these issues. We're extremely excited to lead this conversation and bring in a mix of people in the room to generate practical solutions.

The student-led nonprofit UrbEd Inc. will facilitate an ItAG on building an understanding of underprivileged students’ rights and needs in schools. Specifically, we want to focus on the school to prison pipeline and teacher diversity because these are extremely significant factors in how unhealthy classroom environments are created. Zero tolerance policies have plagued Philadelphia classrooms for decades and have an especially negative effect on low-income minority students. To work towards ending these issues we must change the environments and cultures of these schools that are doing a better job imprisoning students rather than preparing them for higher education. We would emphasize a more positive culture and the environment through interactions between school faculty and students. We must address the lack of diversity in faculty. Encouraging more people of color, particularly Black males to teach in schools. We want to work to create schools that elevate instead of regulating students. As students, we have a unique perspective on these issues. We would be more than honored to lead a series of sessions working towards changing classroom and school culture to promote healthier relationships between students and staff.

UrbEd is excited to be a presenter at the Philadelphia Black History Collective in their second annual conference. The theme of the conference is about raising student voice and student narratives and this is core to UrbEd's mission as well. UrbEd team members Zoey and Horace will be presenting on how we can maximize student voice, starting in the classroom and reaching to all aspects of education. We'll be building on historic themes in reform such as the student walkout 50 years ago and current issues such as a voting student on the local school board. We'll be engaging students, educators, advocates, and reformers about how we can effectively educate students about advocacy and equip students to use their voice. UrbEd is a newly founded, youth-run non-profit that fights for a quality and efficient urban education. We realize that there is an immense number of committed citizens across the city, working on issues related to education. As we fight for equal opportunity within the education system, we continuously look to build a network with these groups and build a system that will benefit us and what we fight for. With that, we as an organization invite you to come network with other advocates and reformers of urban education and other issues that affect Philadelphia students.

During the event, we will be honoring Tilden Middle School and Blankenburg Elementary School with $300.00 checks to improve the education students are receiving. We will also be releasing our State of Education report which informs stakeholders about the school-to-prison pipeline, teacher diversity, building conditions and the SRC.
